thank you in spanish

Gracias

Gracias is the most common way to say thank you in Spanish. It’s used formally and informally in any situation or setting. It is the perfect expression for small favours and simple thanks. If you’re starting with Spanish, use this word. If you want to express gratitude in a more advanced way or with a more profound sentiment, below we have more options.

Muchas gracias

To express yourself with more gratitude, you can say muchas gracias. It’s the equivalent of thank you very much in English. This phrase can also be used in formal and informal settings. The words mucho and mucha in English mean a lot. Since the word gracias is feminine, we use the feminine version, mucha, in front but in its plural form because we are saying many thanks.

  • Muchas gracias por su ayuda. = Thank you very much for your help.

Muchísimas gracias

Muchísimas gracias is similar to muchas gracias, but a hint stronger. It can be used in formal and informal situations as well. The closest English translation is thank you so much. It shows a higher level of appreciation for something.

  • Muchísimas gracias por ayudarme con mi tarea. = Thank you so much for helping me with my homework.

Fun Fact: In Spanish, we use certain endings to express an adjective to an extreme degree. This makes it a superlative adjective. When we use -ísimo after mucho, we are raising the degree of thankfulness.

Other examples:

  • grande = big
  • grandísimo = very, very big, or extremely big
  • bella = beautiful
  • bellísima = very, very beautiful, or extremely beautiful

Mil gracias

If you want to emphasise your gratitude, you can say mil gracias. It translates to a thousand thanks. Similar to the above ways to say thank you, it too can be used in both formal and informal settings. However, most Spanish speakers prefer to use it in informal situations.

Un millón de gracias

You can raise your gratefulness another degree higher by saying un millón de gracias which means a million thanks. It’s mostly used in informal settings but can also be used in formal ones.

  • Un millón de gracias por ayudar con el evento de ayer. = A million thanks for helping with yesterday’s event.

Infinitas gracias

Did you think we were done giving thanks in quantities? In Spanish, it’s common to give thanks by saying infinitas gracias. This phrase translates to infinite thanks and expresses endless gratitude towards someone or something. It’s best to use this phrase in informal situations to show how incredibly thankful you are.

Te doy las gracias / te quiero dar las gracias

Te doy las gracias translates to I give you thanks. It’s mostly used in written communication such as texts or emails. There is also a very similar phrase, te quiero dar las gracias. It means I want to give you thanks. This one sounds good both in person and in written communication. If you want to use the formal version of these two phrases, you can say the following: Le doy las gracias and Le quiero dar las gracias

  • Le quiero dar las gracias por ir conmigo al doctor la semana pasada. = I want to give you thanks for going with me to the doctor last week.
  • Te doy las gracias por hablar con mi familia acerca de ese tema. = I give you thanks for speaking to my family about that topic.

Gracias de todo corazón

An informal thank you that’s much more heartfelt and deep is gracias de todo corazón. It translates to thank you with all my heart. This phrase emphasises deep gratitude and is mostly used in informal situations. However, it’s okay to use it in formal situations too, such as when addressing an elder or someone who did something very significant for you.

Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón

Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón which translates to thank you from the bottom of my heart, is even more heartfelt and expresses an emotional and deep gratitude towards someone. It’s mostly said in informal situations because usually, it’s friends and family who do something so meaningful that it deserves this phrase.

  • Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón por cuidar a mi madre en el hospital. = Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking care of my mother at the hospital.

Te lo agradezco

Moving away from the word gracias, we will now turn our attention to thank-you phrases that stem from the Spanish verb agradecer (to thank/appreciate). In English, it means I appreciate it or I thank you for it. This is the informal use but if you want to use it formally, change te to se: Se lo agradezco.

This phrase is normally used without stating the object in the sentence because lo is the direct object or thing you appreciate. In your conversation with the other person, you already know what lo represents, so you don’t have to add any information. However, if you want to, you can add some detail to your statement. Example:

  • Te lo agradezco que hayas ido a la escuela por mi hija. = I thank you for going to school for my daughter.

Te is the indirect object pronoun for ‘you’ and lo is the genderless direct object pronoun ‘it’.

Te lo agradezco mucho

Similar to using gracias, we can put a stronger emphasis on our gratefulness by adding the word mucho (a lot). This time we use the masculine version because agradezco is masculine. It translates to I appreciate it a lot. It can be used informally or you can say Se lo agradezco mucho to make it formal.

Te lo agradezco muchísimo

Te lo agradezco muchísimo in English is I appreciate it so much or very much. Similar to the above, you use se instead of te to make it formal. Using muchísimo raises the degree of thankfulness.

  • Estos zapatos me encantaron. Te lo agradezco muchísimo que me los hayas regalado. = I loved these shoes. I appreciate it so much that you gave them to me.

Te lo agradezco tanto

Tanto means so much in English. Therefore, this phrase translates in the same way as the above phrase, I appreciate it so much. To use it formally, change the te to se.

  • Te lo agradezco tanto que hayas tomado tiempo para verme. = I appreciate it so much that you made time to see me.

Estoy agradecido

Estoy agradecido translates to I’m thankful. It can be said as is, but it’s usually followed by the word contigo, which means with you. To say it in a formal situation, you say Estoy agradecido con usted. This phrase can be used in all situations, but it’s more common to hear it in formal contexts.

  • Estoy agradecido contigo por ayudarme a pagar la renta. = I’m thankful to you for helping me pay my rent.
  • Estoy agradecido con usted por ayudarme a encontrar trabajo. = I’m thankful to you for helping me find a job.

Estoy muy agradecido

Similar to all the above ways to say thank you in Spanish, you can raise the degree by adding muy (very) or any other emphatic adverb, such as extremadamente (extremely), or demasiado (too much). You can add contigo (with you) after it or con usted (with you-formal).

  • Estoy muy agradecido contigo por toda tu ayuda. = I’m very thankful to you for all your help.
  • Estoy muy agradecido con usted por darme una oportunidad. = I’m very thankful to you for giving me an opportunity.
